Why Travel to Rajasthan on a Private Tour?

Rajasthan is India's most theatrical state — a place where medieval forts rise from desert plains, where maharajas once held court in palaces that now welcome guests for dinner, and where the colour and noise of its markets feel like a civilisation entirely unto itself.

At Indus Bound, we have been designing private tours to Rajasthan since 2011, and it is a destination our specialists return to season after season. We know which room in the Taj Lake Palace faces the mountains at dawn, which guide in Jodhpur will take you through the blue city's lanes to a rooftop that no guidebook has found, and which desert camp outside Jaisalmer offers genuine solitude rather than a tourist show. That kind of knowledge only comes from being here — repeatedly, attentively, over many years.

A private Rajasthan tour with us means your own vehicle and driver throughout, specialist local guides at each destination, and accommodation chosen from properties we have personally stayed in — from the iconic palace hotels of Jaipur and Udaipur to the smaller, family-run havelis that capture Rajasthan's soul more quietly. Every itinerary is built around your dates, your pace, and your interests.

Our Rajasthan tours cover Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Ranthambore, Bikaner, Bundi, Pushkar, Mandawa, and the rural heartlands in between.

Top Things to do in Rajasthan

  • Walk the ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur — one of India's best-preserved medieval forts, with views over the blue-washed city below that are unlike anything else in Rajasthan. Best visited in the early morning before the heat and crowds build.
  • Tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park — one of India's most reliable parks for Bengal tiger sightings, set against a dramatic backdrop of ruins and dry jungle. Our wildlife specialist Raghu designs safaris around the zones and timing that maximise your chances.
  • Sunset on Lake Pichola, Udaipur— take a private boat across the lake at dusk, with the City Palace and Taj Lake Palace reflected on the water. Arrange a private dinner on the rooftop of a heritage haveli overlooking the ghats.
  • Explore the living fort of Jaisalmer— unlike most Indian forts, Jaisalmer's is still inhabited. Wind through its narrow lanes, visit the ornate Jain temples inside, and time your camel ride into the Thar dunes for the final hour before sunset.

Rajasthan Travel - FAQs

Find the answers to all of our most frequently asked questions.

October–November:

The finest window for Rajasthan travel. Temperatures drop to a comfortable range across the state, the monsoon has cleared, and the landscape is at its greenest. Ranthambore's tiger activity is strong in this period.

February–March:

A second excellent window before the heat builds. Ideal for combining Rajasthan with North India or Kerala — cool enough for long days of sightseeing, warm enough for evenings on rooftop terraces.

December–January:

Cold nights in Jaisalmer and Jaipur, but the days are clear and the sites are quieter than peak season. The Pushkar and Nagaur fairs typically fall in this window — extraordinary cultural events if your dates align.

April–June:

The desert heats significantly. Jaisalmer and Jodhpur become intense; however, Udaipur — cooled by its lakes — remains manageable. Wildlife sightings in Ranthambore can be exceptional as animals congregate around water sources.

July–September (Monsoon):

Not the ideal time for most of Rajasthan, though the landscape transforms dramatically and hotel rates drop. Best suited to travellers comfortable with heat, humidity, and occasional road disruptions.

Every Indus Bound private Rajasthan tour includes a dedicated air-conditioned vehicle and driver for the full duration of your journey, specialist local guides at each city and site, and personally vetted accommodation — from Jaipur's iconic palace hotels to intimate family-run havelis in smaller towns. All internal transfers, domestic flights where required, and curated experiences such as desert camps and wildlife safaris are arranged seamlessly. A dedicated trip coordinator and 24/7 on-ground support are included throughout. International flights are not included. Every itinerary is built from scratch around your travel dates, interests, and pace.

For most private Rajasthan tours, a dedicated air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver is both the most comfortable and flexible option — it allows stops at villages, forts, and viewpoints that trains and flights cannot. For longer distances, such as Jaipur to Jaisalmer or Jodhpur to Udaipur, domestic flights or overnight trains are practical alternatives we arrange as part of your itinerary.

The Palace on Wheels, India's most celebrated heritage train, is also an option for travellers who want the journey itself to be part of the experience.

For the classic circuit — Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, and Jaisalmer — twelve to fourteen days is a comfortable minimum at a pace that allows genuine immersion rather than a rush between forts. To add Ranthambore for a tiger safari, allow two additional days. For a deeper journey that includes Bundi, Pushkar, Bikaner, and the painted haveli towns of Shekhawati, seventeen to twenty days gives the itinerary room to breathe. Rajasthan particularly rewards travellers who resist the temptation to cover too much ground too quickly.

Absolutely — and many of our most popular itineraries do exactly this. Rajasthan connects naturally with North India; Jaipur is part of the famous Golden Triangle alongside Delhi and Agra, making a combined journey a logical and seamless circuit. Rajasthan also pairs beautifully with Kerala for a striking contrast of desert landscapes and tropical backwaters, or with Central India for a wildlife-focused extension into Madhya Pradesh's tiger reserves. Because every Indus Bound itinerary is tailor-made, combining regions is straightforward — we handle all routing and logistics so the journey flows naturally.

Rajasthan has some of the world's finest heritage hotels. The Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur — floating on Lake Pichola — is among India's most iconic properties. Rambagh Palace in Jaipur, a former royal residence, remains the benchmark for Rajput grandeur. In Jodhpur, the RAASand Umaid Bhawan Palace offer extraordinary stays in very different registers — intimate boutique versus grand maharaja scale. Jaisalmer's Suryagarh brings understated desert luxury. For something smaller and more personal, Bhainsrorgarh Fort in Bundi and Deogarh Mahal are properties our specialists particularly love. We have personally stayed in every hotel we recommend.

Rajasthan is one of India's most rewarding family destinations. Children respond instinctively to its scale and drama — elephant encounters at Amber Fort, camel rides into the Thar Desert dunes at Jaisalmer, tiger safaris in Ranthambore, and the sheer spectacle of Mehrangarh Fort rising from the rock above Jodhpur.

Our family itineraries are paced carefully, with shorter travel days, child-friendly accommodation, and guides experienced in engaging younger travellers. We design every family journey around the ages and interests of the children travelling, rather than applying a standard template.
