Experience Kerala's backwaters, beaches, wildlife, and culture on a bespoke journey with luxury stays, private guides, and authentic encounters.

Why Travel to Kerala on a Private Tour?

Kerala moves at a different pace to the rest of India. There are no great Mughal monuments here, no desert forts or royal palaces — what Kerala offers instead is something quieter and, for many travellers, more lasting: a landscape of extraordinary beauty, a culture of remarkable depth, and a hospitality that feels genuinely unhurried.

At Indus Bound, we have been designing private tours to Kerala since 2011, and it is a destination our specialists return to with particular affection. We know which houseboat operator on the Alleppey backwaters provides genuine comfort rather than a floating guesthouse experience, which tea estate in Munnar offers a private planting tour rather than a gift shop visit, and which beach property along the Malabar coast strikes the right balance between seclusion and service. That knowledge comes from being here — every season, over many years.

A private Kerala tour with Indus Bound means your own air-conditioned vehicle and driver throughout, specialist local guides at each destination, and accommodation chosen from properties we have personally inspected — from CGH Earth's acclaimed eco-luxury lodges to the boutique colonial heritage hotels of Fort Cochin. Every itinerary is designed around your interests and pace, not a fixed departure schedule.

Our Kerala tours cover Cochin, Munnar, Thekkady and Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Alleppey and Kumarakom backwaters, Wayanad, Kovalam, Mararikulum, and the quieter Malabar coast in the north. The itineraries below are starting points — every journey we design is different.

Top Things to do in Kerala

  • Cruise the backwaters of Alleppey on a private houseboat — the kettuvallam, or rice barge, converted to overnight accommodation is Kerala's most iconic experience. Choose a premium vessel with an en-suite cabin, a private chef, and a route that takes you away from the tourist corridors and into the quieter village canals.
  • Explore Munnar's high-altitude tea estates— at 1,600 metres, Munnar's rolling plantations are among the most scenic in Asia. Arrange a private estate tour with a planting manager rather than a public visitor centre walk — the experience is entirely different.
  • Wildlife safari in Periyar, Thekkady — Kerala's most accessible wildlife sanctuary, set around a vast artificial lake. Tiger sightings are rare, but elephants, gaur, and sambar deer are regularly spotted. Early morning boat rides on the lake offer the best wildlife encounters.
  • Ayurvedic retreat in the backwaters — Kerala is the heartland of Ayurveda in India. A genuine treatment programme at a qualified retreat — rather than a hotel spa add-on — can be built into any itinerary, from three-night introductory programmes to two-week panchakarma treatments.

Featured Kerala Tour Itineraries

Kerala does not follow a single script — the right itinerary depends on whether you are drawn to the backwaters, the hill stations, the coast, the wildlife, or some combination of all four. The journeys below represent our most-travelled private Kerala routes, from a focused ten-day introduction to a sixteen-day exploration that takes in the full sweep of South India's hill country.

Every itinerary is a starting point. We shape each one around your travel dates, your preferred pace, and the experiences that matter most — whether that means a longer houseboat overnight, a dedicated Ayurveda programme, or an extension into Tamil Nadu's temple cities.

When is the Best Time to Visit Kerala?

October - February:

The finest window for Kerala travel across all regions. The northeast monsoon has cleared the plains and the southwest coast is at its best — sunny days, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures throughout. Peak season for backwaters and beaches; book houseboats and beach properties early.

March - April:

Still very good, particularly in the hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad where temperatures remain cool. Humidity builds along the coast in April but evenings are pleasant. A quieter and often more affordable alternative to peak season.

June – September (Monsoon):

Kerala receives India's heaviest monsoon rainfall in this period, transforming the landscape dramatically. The backwaters swell, the tea estates turn an impossibly bright green, and the air smells of rain and spice. Not recommended for beach travel, but Ayurveda practitioners consider monsoon the optimal season for treatments.A genuinely beautiful time to visit for the right traveller.

May:

The hottest and most humid month. Best avoided for most travellers unless combining with a hill station stay in Munnar or Wayanad.

Kerala Travel — Frequently Asked Questions

Every Indus Bound private Kerala tour includes a dedicated air-conditioned vehicle and driver throughout, specialist local guides in each destination, and personally inspected accommodation — from CGH Earth's acclaimed eco-luxury lodges to the boutique heritage hotels of Fort Cochin. Houseboat overnight on the backwaters, internal transfers, and curated experiences such as spice plantation visits and Ayurveda consultations are arranged as part of your itinerary. A dedicated trip coordinator and 24/7 on-ground support are included throughout. International flights are not included.

Every journey is designed from scratch around your dates, pace, and interests.

For a focused introduction — Cochin, Munnar, and the backwaters — eight to ten days is a comfortable minimum that allows genuine immersion without feeling rushed. To add Thekkady and Periyar wildlife, allow twelve days. If you want to include Wayanad's spice country, the quieter Malabar coast, or a dedicated Ayurveda programme, fourteen to sixteen days gives the itinerary the right pace. Kerala particularly rewards travellers who resist the temptation to cover too much ground — it is a destination best experienced slowly.

The finest houseboat experiences in Kerala move away from the crowded main Alleppey canals and into the quieter village waterways, where you encounter daily backwater life rather than a tourist corridor. Choose a premium kettuvallam — a converted traditional rice barge — with an en-suite cabin, a private chef who cooks fresh Kerala meals, and a route that includes at least one full night moored in silence away from other vessels. Kumarakom's backwaters offer a quieter alternative to Alleppey. We personally vet every houseboat operator we recommend, rather than working from a standard vendor list.

Absolutely — and Kerala's distinctiveness makes it an ideal contrast to almost any other Indian destination. The most popular combination is North India and Kerala: the Mughal grandeur of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur followed by Kerala's tropical calm creates a journey that captures two entirely different faces of the country. Kerala also pairs naturally with Rajasthan, Karnataka and Goa, or Tamil Nadu's temple cities as part of a broader South India circuit. Because every Indus Bound itinerary is tailor-made, combining regions is straightforward — we handle all routing and logistics so the journey flows without stress.

Kerala has some of India's most distinctive luxury properties, many of them integrated beautifully into the landscape. The Taj Lake Palace equivalent in Kerala is CGH Earth's Coconut Lagoon at Kumarakom — a heritage property accessible only by boat, set among canals and paddy fields. In Fort Cochin, the Brunton Boatyard and Eighth Bastion offer exceptional colonial heritage stays. Spice Village at Thekkady and Tea Sanctuary in Munnar are outstanding for their eco-luxury approach. For beach retreats, Marari Beach Resort at Mararikulum is among South India's finest. We have personally stayed in every property we recommend.

Kerala is the heartland of Ayurveda in India — the tradition has been practised here for over 3,000 years, and the state's climate, plant diversity, and established lineage of practitioners make it genuinely the best place in the country to experience it. For a meaningful programme, we recommend a minimum of five nights at a qualified retreat rather than a hotel spa add-on — the difference in depth and authenticity is significant. Introductory three to five night programmes work well as part of a broader Kerala itinerary. Full panchakarma treatment programmes typically require fourteen to twenty-one days and can be arranged as a dedicated journey.

Kerala is one of India's most family-friendly destinations. Children engage naturally with its variety — elephant encounters at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, spice plantation walks where they learn to identify cardamom and pepper, houseboat overnights on the backwaters, and the relaxed pace of a beach retreat at the journey's end. Fort Cochin's colonial streets, Chinese fishing nets, and kathakali dance performances work well for older children and teenagers. Our family Kerala itineraries are paced carefully, with shorter travel days and accommodation chosen for comfort and space. We design every family journey around the specific ages and interests of the children travelling.
