Why Travel to Kerala on a Private Tour?
Why Travel to Kerala on a Private Tour?
Kerala moves at a different pace to the rest of India. There are no great Mughal monuments here, no desert forts or royal palaces — what Kerala offers instead is something quieter and, for many travellers, more lasting: a landscape of extraordinary beauty, a culture of remarkable depth, and a hospitality that feels genuinely unhurried.
At Indus Bound, we have been designing private tours to Kerala since 2011, and it is a destination our specialists return to with particular affection. We know which houseboat operator on the Alleppey backwaters provides genuine comfort rather than a floating guesthouse experience, which tea estate in Munnar offers a private planting tour rather than a gift shop visit, and which beach property along the Malabar coast strikes the right balance between seclusion and service. That knowledge comes from being here — every season, over many years.
A private Kerala tour with Indus Bound means your own air-conditioned vehicle and driver throughout, specialist local guides at each destination, and accommodation chosen from properties we have personally inspected — from CGH Earth's acclaimed eco-luxury lodges to the boutique colonial heritage hotels of Fort Cochin. Every itinerary is designed around your interests and pace, not a fixed departure schedule.
Our Kerala tours cover Cochin, Munnar, Thekkady and Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, the Alleppey and Kumarakom backwaters, Wayanad, Kovalam, Mararikulum, and the quieter Malabar coast in the north. The itineraries below are starting points — every journey we design is different.
Top Things to do in Kerala
- Cruise the backwaters of Alleppey on a private houseboat — the kettuvallam, or rice barge, converted to overnight accommodation is Kerala's most iconic experience. Choose a premium vessel with an en-suite cabin, a private chef, and a route that takes you away from the tourist corridors and into the quieter village canals.
- Explore Munnar's high-altitude tea estates— at 1,600 metres, Munnar's rolling plantations are among the most scenic in Asia. Arrange a private estate tour with a planting manager rather than a public visitor centre walk — the experience is entirely different.
- Wildlife safari in Periyar, Thekkady — Kerala's most accessible wildlife sanctuary, set around a vast artificial lake. Tiger sightings are rare, but elephants, gaur, and sambar deer are regularly spotted. Early morning boat rides on the lake offer the best wildlife encounters.
- Ayurvedic retreat in the backwaters — Kerala is the heartland of Ayurveda in India. A genuine treatment programme at a qualified retreat — rather than a hotel spa add-on — can be built into any itinerary, from three-night introductory programmes to two-week panchakarma treatments.
Top Destinations in Kerala
Backwaters
The Kerala backwaters form a tranquil network of interconnected canals, rivers, and lakes. Fringed by swaying palms, this serene labyrinth is best experienced aboard a traditional houseboat.
Cochin
Cochin, a historic Kerala port, is a vibrant blend of old-world charm and modern life. It features iconic Chinese fishing nets, colonial spice warehouses, and a rich, multicultural coastal heritage.
Featured Kerala Tour Itineraries
Kerala does not follow a single script — the right itinerary depends on whether you are drawn to the backwaters, the hill stations, the coast, the wildlife, or some combination of all four. The journeys below represent our most-travelled private Kerala routes, from a focused ten-day introduction to a sixteen-day exploration that takes in the full sweep of South India's hill country.
Every itinerary is a starting point. We shape each one around your travel dates, your preferred pace, and the experiences that matter most — whether that means a longer houseboat overnight, a dedicated Ayurveda programme, or an extension into Tamil Nadu's temple cities.

Kerala's defining experiences on one private journey — Fort Cochin's colonial quarter, Munnar's high-altitude tea estates, wildlife at Thekkady's Periyar sanctuary, an overnight on the Alleppey backwaters aboard a traditional rice barge, and a beach retreat at Mararikulum.

When is the Best Time to Visit Kerala?
October - February:
The finest window for Kerala travel across all regions. The northeast monsoon has cleared the plains and the southwest coast is at its best — sunny days, calm seas, and comfortable temperatures throughout. Peak season for backwaters and beaches; book houseboats and beach properties early.
March - April:
Still very good, particularly in the hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad where temperatures remain cool. Humidity builds along the coast in April but evenings are pleasant. A quieter and often more affordable alternative to peak season.
June – September (Monsoon):
Kerala receives India's heaviest monsoon rainfall in this period, transforming the landscape dramatically. The backwaters swell, the tea estates turn an impossibly bright green, and the air smells of rain and spice. Not recommended for beach travel, but Ayurveda practitioners consider monsoon the optimal season for treatments.A genuinely beautiful time to visit for the right traveller.
May:
The hottest and most humid month. Best avoided for most travellers unless combining with a hill station stay in Munnar or Wayanad.
