Why Choose a Luxury Private Tour of East India?

East India is the subcontinent's most varied region — a geographical and cultural arc that stretches from the colonial grandeur of Kolkata and the tea-terraced hillsides of Darjeeling through the Himalayan Buddhist kingdoms of Sikkim to the extraordinary tribal highlands of Nagaland and the remote mountain monasteries of Arunachal Pradesh, with Assam's floodplain wildlife reserves threading through the centre. No other region of India contains this much variety within a single itinerary.

At Indus Bound, we have been designing private tours to East India and the Northeast since 2011, and it is a part of India that rewards specialists more than almost anywhere else on the subcontinent. We know which tea estate in Darjeeling offers a genuine planting experience rather than a tourist walkway, which zone in Kaziranga positions you best for one-horned rhino and elephant encounters on the seasonal floodplains, and which village elder in the Mon district of Nagaland can speak to the Konyak headhunter tradition with the authority it deserves. We also operate private river expeditions on the Brahmaputra and Ganges — journeys that reach communities and landscapes no road itinerary can access.

A private East India tour with Indus Bound means your own vehicle and driver throughout, specialist naturalist guides in the wildlife reserves, cultural and tribal heritage guides in Nagaland and Arunachal, and accommodation chosen from properties we have personally inspected — from Darjeeling's colonial heritage hotels to the intimate lodges of Kaziranga. Every itinerary is designed around your travel dates and interests.

Our luxury East India private tours include Kolkata, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok, Kaziranga, Assam, Nagaland, the Sundarbans, Puri, Bhubaneswar, Konark, Cuttack and Shantiniketan, with every itinerary individually tailored to your interests, travel style and preferred pace.

East India Travel - FAQs

Find the answers to all of our most frequently asked questions.

October–November:

The finest window across most of East India. Skies are clear after the monsoon, Kanchenjunga and the eastern Himalayan peaks are visible from Darjeeling and Sikkim, and Kaziranga's wildlife is active and accessible. The Brahmaputra river cruise season begins. Temperatures are comfortable from the plains to the foothills.

December–February:

The Hornbill Festival in Nagaland falls in the first week of December — the single best time to visit the Northeast for cultural immersion. Kohima, Mokokchung, and Mon are at their most atmospheric in this window. Note: Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh can be snowbound from December to February; Sela Pass may close temporarily. Kaziranga remains open and wildlife sightings are excellent.

March–April:

Spring brings rhododendron blooms across Sikkim and the Darjeeling hills — one of the eastern Himalayas' most spectacular seasonal events. Wildlife viewing in Kaziranga peaks as vegetation dries. Excellent for combining Sikkim with Assam before the pre-monsoon heat builds.

June–September (Monsoon):

The Brahmaputra floods seasonally, partially inundating Kaziranga — the park partially closes as animals move to higher ground. Darjeeling and Sikkim are frequently cloud-covered. Arunachal Pradesh is accessible but roads can be disrupted. Generally best avoided for wildlife itineraries; Kolkata and cultural destinations remain viable.

Every Indus Bound private East India tour includes a dedicated air-conditioned vehicle and driver throughout, specialist naturalist guides for wildlife safaris in Kaziranga and Nameri, cultural and tribal heritage guides in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, and personally inspected accommodation — from Darjeeling's colonial heritage hotels to Kaziranga's finest jungle lodges. All Inner Line Permits for restricted states, internal transfers, and domestic flights where required are arranged as part of your itinerary. A dedicated trip coordinator and 24/7 on-ground support are included throughout. International flights are not included. Every journey is designed from scratch around your travel dates, wildlife priorities, and cultural interests.

The Hornbill Festival is Nagaland's most celebrated annual event, held in the first week of December — typically December 1 to 10 — at the Kisama Heritage Village, fourteen kilometres from Kohima. All sixteen of Nagaland's major tribes gather for ten days of traditional warrior dance, music, craft exhibitions, indigenous sports, and ceremonial dress displays.

Named after the great Indian hornbill — a bird central to Naga cultural symbolism — it remains almost entirely unknown to international travellers, which means it is completely authentic rather than performed for tourism. Indus Bound designs dedicated itineraries around the festival, combining it with tribal village visits in Mon and Mokokchung. It is among the most extraordinary cultural events in all of Asia.

Both combinations work naturally. East India and North India connects most logically through Kolkata — beginning with Delhi, Agra, and Varanasi before arriving in Kolkata and continuing into the Darjeeling hills or the Northeast. The Ganges River Cruise between Kolkata and Varanasi is a particularly elegant way to link the two regions, sailing between the eastern and northern heartlands of India over eight to ten days.

East India and Nepal connects seamlessly through Darjeeling and Sikkim — from the Darjeeling hills it is a straightforward journey to Kathmandu, making a combined eastern Himalayan circuit covering Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Nepal one of the most scenic itineraries we design.

Both Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland require Inner Line Permits for all foreign nationals — a government requirement designed to protect the cultural and ecological integrity of these restricted border states.

The ILP for Arunachal Pradesh must be obtained before travel and specifies the districts you are permitted to visit; Tawang requires a separate Protected Area Permit in addition. Nagaland's ILP process is more straightforward but equally mandatory.

Indus Bound handles all permit applications as a standard part of itinerary planning for these destinations — our specialists know the current requirements, processing times, and any district-specific restrictions. You will never need to navigate this process independently when travelling with us.

East India's finest wildlife experience is Kaziranga National Park in Assam — a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing two-thirds of the world's entire one-horned rhinoceros population, alongside exceptional elephant, wild water buffalo, and tiger numbers across its seasonal floodplain grasslands.

Nameri National Park, further west in Assam, offers a more intimate experience with excellent birding and the rare white-winged wood duck. Dibru-Saikhowa — one of India's least-visited reserves — is the only place in the world where you can see feral horses living wild alongside Gangetic river dolphins.

For those combining East India with the Northeast, Manas Tiger Reserve on the Bhutan border is outstanding and remains genuinely off the international tourism map.

It depends on which part of East India. Darjeeling, Sikkim, and Kolkata are excellent first India destinations — manageable, visually spectacular, and culturally rich without the intensity of Delhi or Varanasi. Kaziranga's jungle lodges offer an immersive but entirely comfortable introduction to India's wildlife. The Northeast states — Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh — are not recommended as a first India experience; they are deeply rewarding but logistically complex, requiring permits, long driving days, and a comfort with genuine remoteness that most first-time visitors are better equipped for on a second or third India journey.

Our specialists will always advise honestly on which East India destinations suit first-timers and which are better saved for return visits.
