Built by King Singe Namgyal, in the Tibetan form of architecture, this palace is said to be the inspiration of the famous Potala in Lhasa. The ruins of the old fort built in the 16th century lie beyond this palace on the Tsemo Hill, which a royal residence of the Namgyals.

It is an outstanding specimen of Ladakhi architecture. Standing on the picturesque top a hillock, the monastery encloses numerous stupas, Thangkas, statues, swords, wonderful wall paintings and a large pillar carved with Buddha’s ideas and preaching, all in a mammoth 12 storied building complex.


Nubra Valley

Nubra Valley lies in the union territory of Ladakh at a distance of around 140 Km from Leh. Located on the ancient Silk Route, the valley has Shyok and Nubra rivers snaking through it and some beautiful monasteries. This valley is a literal definition of Heaven on Earth.

The first King of Ladakh built this Monastery and is placed on a ridge similar to a knife edge and the approach is decorated with many stupas and shrines. The prime attraction of the monastery is the blue haired Maitreya Buddha of 17.5 m high, which is made with copper and brass and also decorated beautifully with studs of stones.

Stok Palace
