Tanjore or Thanjavur got its name from the ancient pronunciation of the region, which was known as Thanjavoor. Thanjavoor was an integral part of the ancient Chola kingdom that flourished in South India.
Thanjavur Royal Palace
Flaunting a marvelous spread of mural work, the Thanjavur Royal Palace was built during the Nayak rule and its construction was further carried on during the rule of the Marathas. It is the official residence of the Bhonsle family and is locally known as Aranmanai.
Brihadeeswara Temple
The biggest attraction of Thanjavur - The Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the Big Temple. Built during the reign of the Great Chola emperor, Raja Raja Chola, this temple is an architectural marvel. . The shrine itself is a 216 feet structure. The sanctum is dotted with paintings from the Chola and Nayak periods.
Srirangam Temple (Trichy)
Srirangam, surrounded by the waters of the River Kaveri on one side and its tributary the River Kollidam on the other, is a 600-acre island-town enclosed within the seven walls of the gigantic Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple. This is the seat of the pontiff of the Vaishnavite, who are the worshippers of Lord Vishnu.
Rock Temple (Trichy)
Rock Fort, at an age of over 3.8 billion years is as old as the rocks in Greenland and much older than the Himalayas. Begun in 600 CE by kings of the Chola dynasty, the Shiva temple is located in a gargantuan 274-foot-high rock that is visible for miles around. Much of it was built by the Nayak kings in the 16-17th centuries.
