Meenakshi Temple
Madurai's main attraction is the famous Meenakshi temples in the heart of the old town, a riotously baroque example of Dravidian architecture with gopurams (towers) covered from top to bottom with a breathless profusion of multi-colored images of gods, goddesses, animals and mythical figures.
Thirupparankundram
Thirupparankundram Temple is a rock-cut temple of Lord Subramanya, situated at a distance of 8 km from Madurai. The temple is thronged by devotees throughout the year, as it is one of the holy abodes of Lord Murugan. This temple was built by Pandayan King in the 8th century. The innermost shrine is cut out of a solid rock.
Thirumalai Nayak Palace
Thirumalai Nayak Mahal is famous for its impressive arches and "stuccowork" on its domes. The austere exteriors offset the palatial interiors, with tall, white pillars lining the corridors. These pillars are a characteristic feature of the place, at 20 m high and 4 m in circumference.
